cūnābula, ōrum, n. (cunae), die Lagerstätte der kleinen Kinder u. jungen Tiere als Bett, I) eig.: a) der kleinen Kinder, das Wiegenbett, die Wiege, esse in cunabulis, Cic.: a primis cunabulis, von frühester Kindheit an, Col.: qui non in cunabulis, sed in campo consules sunt facti, nicht durch ihre Abstammung, Cic. – b) die Lagerstätte der jungen Bienen, Verg.: u. der Vögel, das Nest, cunabula in terra facere, nisten, Plin. – II) meton.: 1) Wiege, Wiegenort = Geburtsort, frühester Aufenthalt, -Wohnsitz, Iovis, Prop.: gentis, Verg. – 2) Wiege = erste Anfänge, Ursprung, urbis, Apul.: quasi cunabula quaedam et elementa virtutis, Val. Max.
