Heraclitus

Hērāclītus, ī, m. (Ἡράκλειτος), I) berühmter griech. Philosoph aus der Stadt Ephesus (ungefähr ums J. 500 v. Chr.), bes. bekannt durch seine trübe Ansicht vom menschlichen Leben (man sagte von ihm, er weine immer, wie von Demokrit, er lache immer). Seine Schriften, die er im Dianatempel zu Ephesus niederlegte, waren außerordentlich dunkel. In der Natur nahm er zwei Grundkräfte an, den Streit (ερις, sonst νεικος) u. die Einigkeit (ἁρμονία od. φιλία), Cic. de div. 2, 133; de fin. 2, 15: Heracliti secta, Apul. de dogm. Plat. 1, 2. – II) Heraclitus Tyrius, ein akadem. Philosoph, Cic. Acad. 2, 11.
