1. Īcarus, ī, m. (Ἴκαρος, bei den Griechen gew. Ἰκάριος), ein Athener, Vater der Erigone, der unter Pandions Regierung den nach Attika kommenden Dionysos (Bacchus) gastlich aufnahm. Zum Danke gab ihm der Gott die Rebe u. Schläuche mit Wein. Mit diesen Schläuchen fuhr er auf einem Wagen umher u. verteilte die Gabe des Gottes, wodurch er der Begründer des Weinbaues wurde. Hirten, die den von übermäßigem Rausche Trunkenen für vergiftet hielten, töteten u. begruben ihn. Seine Tochter Erigone suchte ihn u. fand, durch seinen treuen Hund Mära geleitet, sein Grab. In ihrem Schmerze erhängte sie sich an dem Baume, unter dem ihr Vater begraben lag. Zeus od. Dionysos versetzte alle drei als Gestirne an den Himmel, den Ikarus samt seinem Becher als Bootes od.
