caelo, āvī, ātum, āre (von 1. caelum), I) entsprechend dem griech. τορεύω = auf Metall (bes. Gold u. Silber) erhabene Arbeiten stechen (später auch gießen), ziselieren, in erhabener Arbeit ausführen, halberhaben schnitzen, speciem caelare argento, Cic.: calvam auro, mit G. auslegen, Liv.: in auro fortia facta patrum, Verg.: scuta auro, argento, arma auro et argento, Liv.: prägn. v. der Pers., miles non caelatus auro et argento, sed ferro et animis fretus, Liv. – tecta caelata, Enn. fr.: vasa caelata, Cic. u.
