Oros. – meton., der umgebende Kreis, die umgebende Schar, angelorum, Tert. de orat. 3. – II) übtr., a) der Umstand, die Beschaffenheit, Gell. u. Eccl.: im Plur. b. Tert. de anim. 47. Boëth. de top. 4 in. Serv. Verg. Aen. 2, 384. – u. der Inbegriff der Umstände, dicamus ex circumstantia, Quint. 5, 10, 104. – b) die beengende Umgebung = Druck, Gefahr, Unglück, Tert. de ieiun. 9 u. ö.
